Jesus Bids You Aloha

Shortly before Jesus was to be crucified, He bid you, a heartfelt "Aloha."   (Jesus said...) A little while longer and the world will see Me no more... (John 14.19a)
And Jesus made you three amazing promises...
  • #1 - He promised to prepare a place for you in Heaven.
(Jesus promised you...) In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. (John 14.2)
  • #2 - He promised to return for you.
(Jesus promised you...) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. (John 14.3)
  • #3 - He promised to give you a living gift -- namely, the Holy Spirit.
(Jesus promised you...) And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever, even the Spirit of truth... (John 14.16-17a)

The Third Promise

Today Bible Bell will take you on a brief tour of the Lord's third promise -- the gift of the Holy Spirit!

So kick back, relax, and let God's word give you a heart massage.

You're gonna looove this!

The Perfect Circle

Think about this...
  • In the beginning, God PERSONALLY breathed life into the first people, Adam and Eve.
  • Mouth-to-mouth suscitation!
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. (Gen 2.7)
  • Then Adam sinned and death entered the world.
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin... (Rom 5.12a)
  • In consequence, you were born a sinner.
...thus death spread to all men, because all sinned. (Rom 5.12b)
  • Since you were born a sinner, your spirit was DEAD toward God.
And you... were dead in trespasses and sins. (Eph 2.1a, 2.1c)
  • When you were saved, God the Son PERSONALLY breathed into you the breath of new life, which is the Holy Spirit.
  • Mouth-to-mouth REsuscitation -- CPR from Jesus to you!
And when He (Jesus) had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit." (John 20.22)

It's a perfect circle!

Original life by God's breath => Death by sin => Rebirth by faith => New life by God's breath!

Do you see it?

A Cycle of Temples

And now, think yet again.

On Planet Earth, God has resided in tabernacles or temples...

  • The tabernacle of Moses - destroyed c. 1000 BC
Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. (Ex 40.34)
  • The temple of Solomon - destroyed c. 586 BC
...the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord. (1 Ki 8.11b
  • The temple of God in the flesh - crucified c. 30 AD
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us... (John 1.14a)
  • Zerubbabel/ Herod's temple - destroyed 70 AD

And so it would seem that, ever since 70 AD, God has been without a temple here on Planet Earth.

Thus it would seem that, for nearly 2,000 years, there has been NO place on earth for God to reside among men.

Right? WRONG!!!

God absolutely DOES have a temple on earth even today.

You are God's temple!

God abides among mankind IN YOU!

Halleluyah.
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? (1 Cor 6.19, KJV)

God's Earthly Abodes

Tabernacle of skins => Temples of stone => Temple of God-in-Jesus => Temple of God-in-YOU

Do you see it?

Why does Holy Spirit endure grief when you sin?

Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. (Eph 4.30)

The verses before and after Eph 4.30 are a litany of the character flaws that plague the human race -- dishonesty, bitterness, hatred, evil -- on and on the list goes.

In the midst of this "sin inventory," Eph 4.30 says, "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God." Why?

Think about it...

  • When you sin and fail and flop, your enemies rejoice.
  • Your casual acquaintances merely cluck their tongues.
  • The only people who endure gut-wrenching sorrow over your sins are those who love you.

Your sins, even the hidden ones, bring grief to God's Spirit. Why?

Because He loves you!

Why does Holy Spirit dwell in you?

Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? (1 Cor 6.19)

Nobody wants to be nose-to-nose close to you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

  • Not your loving family
  • Not your closest friends
  • Nobody!

Whoops! There is just one and exactly one exception. God!

God wants to be close to you ALL the time...

  • Every second, every minute
  • Forever!

Holy Spirit is a friend who has chosen to dwell inside your very body and being. All the time!

He stays with you whether you are praying quietly in church or lying in a pool of your own drunken vomit.

He is God-who-sticks! Why?

Because He loves you -- warts and f * * ts and all -- He loves you!

Why does Holy Spirit teach you doctrine?

...the same anointing (Holy Spirit) teaches you concerning all things (1 John 2.27b)

(Jesus said:) When He, the Spirit of truth, has come,
He will guide you into all truth... (John 16.13a, NKJV)

There's an old saying that goes something like this, "A person never stands taller than when he stoops to help a child."

Holy Spirit stoops to teach you about God and Jesus and having victory over sin. This is love indeed.

There can be no greater condescension than for a great teacher of limitless intelligence to teach slow-witted, stubborn, lazy children such as you and me.

Holy Spirit teaches you -- day by day, minute by minute.

  • He holds your hand. Guides you as you take the first stumbling steps on the road to heaven. Picks you up when you fall. Dusts off your fanny and encourages you to keep on keeping on.
  • However often you may fail His lessons, Holy Spirit NEVER gives up on you. Never!
  • And so you know -- in the long run, you cannot fail for He will get you to the Goal. He will!

This is God's amazing love!

Why does Holy Spirit teach you to pray?

...you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father.'' (Rom 8.15b)
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. (Rom 8.26)

It is true friendship and love to teach another person to pray...

  • Like a mother gently and softly coaches her infant child to say those first words, "Ma -ma, Dah-Dah"...
  • So also does Holy Spirit teach you to cry out, "Abba! Daddy!" when praying to God your Father.

But the love God's Spirit has for you is greater than is possible even for your parents...

  • He not only puts the words of prayer in your mouth, He puts the desire to pray in your heart.
  • And when you pray foolishly, or selfishly, or just can't find the right words to say, Holy Spirit prays with you and for you.
  • He ensures that your prayers, however feeble and poor they may be, are perfect and righteous and wonderful unto God.

What love this is!

Why does Holy Spirit seal you?

...having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession (that's you), to the praise of His glory. (Eph 1.13b-14)

In New Testament times, a valuable item was sealed with melted wax.

  • The owner of that item used a signet ring to impress his initial into the wax.
  • The wax then hardened, making the seal permanent.
  • The seal proved who owned the item, and testified to the validity of that item.

When you received Jesus as your Lord and Savior, God put His seal on you.

It is not a wax seal, it is a living seal.

Holy Spirit is the unbreakable sealing wax of God!

  • Holy Spirit seals you to prove that you belong to God.
  • Holy Spirit seals you to protect you from Satan and his evil angels.
  • Holy Spirit seals you as PROOF POSITIVE that yours is the kingdom of Heaven.

Sweet Holy Spirit -- your personal guarantee of God's everlasting love!

And so we end -- for now. Amen.
