The Ten Commandments
Exodus Chapter 20
Navigate

The 10 Commandments of God are given in Exodus chapter 20.

Sad to say, most schools and other "official" places no longer post the 10 Commandments on their walls.

In fact, even some churches do not post them. That's wrong, and it's sad.

Yes, we are saved by God's grace and NOT by the Law.

Nevertheless, a saved person demonstrates his or her love of God by OBEYING Him. Jesus said...

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. John 14:21

The Heart of the 10 Commandments, as Taught by Lord Jesus

In Matthew 22.37-40, Jesus summarized the 10 commandments into two categories...

  • Duties unto God - commandments 1 through 4
  • Duties unto humankind - commandments 5 through 10

See this for yourself in the panels below.

Jesus said unto him, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment." Mt 22.37-38 Duties Unto God

4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
(Jesus said...) "And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Mt 22.39-40 Duties Unto Humankind

6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

The Joy of Obeying God

Amaaaaazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound!
Salvation is a free gift. It is bestowed upon you by the amazing grace of God.

  • You are saved by grace and grace alone.
  • You do not obey God's Law in order to be saved.
  • You obey God's Law because you ARE saved.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Eph 2.8-9
"I can kiss God!"
You obey God's Law as an expression of your love for Him.

Obeying God is a hug around His neck and a kiss upon His lips.

Halleluyah!
(Jesus said...) If you love Me, keep My commandments.
John 14.15

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
1 John 5.3
"I'm alive!"
Walking in the ways of God makes your soul tingle with life and joy.
The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul.
Ps 19.7a, NIV
"At last I know!"
Obedience of God makes you wiser than a rocket scientist concerning the true purpose of existence.
The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. Ps 19.7b, NIV
"I've got the joy-joy-joy-joy down in my heart!"
"Happiness" lasts but a moment.

"Joy" never leaves.

In Christ, joy is what you OWN.
The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart.
Ps 19.8a, NIV
"I can see clearly now!"
The road of life often passes through the valley of the shadow of death.

The commands of God are your searchlight, piercing even the darkest blackness that life can throw at you.
The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
Ps 19.8b, NIV

"Hear me sing, Lord!"

Though the tempest rages,
I shall NOT be moved!
I'm innnn the Rock of Ages,
And I shall NOT be moved!

I shall not be, I shall not be moved.
I shall not be, I shall not be moved!!!

(Halleluyah! Amen, Amen, and AAAAAmen!)

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow evil men's advice, who do not hang around with sinners, scoffing at the things of God.

But they delight in doing everything God wants them to, and day and night are always meditating on His laws and thinking about ways to follow Him more closely.

They are like trees along a river bank bearing luscious fruit each season without fail. Their leaves shall never wither, and all they do shall prosper.
Ps 1.1-3, LB

And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying,
"This is the way, walk ye in it."
Isaiah 30.21a
