Bible Verses About Health & Healing

God's name in His capacity as Healer is Yahweh-Rapha: "The LORD that healeth" Ex 15.26

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits...

  • God forgives all your iniquities.
  • He heals all your diseases.
  • He redeems your life from destruction.
  • He crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies.
  • He satisfies your mouth with good things...
  • So that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Psalm 103.2-5

Healing Granted

In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death.

  • Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, "Thus says the LORD: 'Set your house in order, for you shall die, and not live.'"
  • Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the LORD, saying, "Remember now, O LORD, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what was good in Your sight." And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
  • And it happened, before Isaiah had gone out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying, "Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: "I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you." ' " 2 Kings 20.1-5a

* * *

A man with leprosy came and knelt before Jesus...

  • The man said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean."

  • Immediately he was cured of his leprosy. Mt 8.2-3

Healing Withheld

Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick in Miletus. 2 Tim 4.20

* * *

Concerning this thing [an unnamed physical disability] I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me.

  • God said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness."
  • Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my disabilities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Cor 12.8-9
Other verses about healing and medical workers

Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones. Prov 16.24

A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones. Prov 17.22

Is anyone among you sick???

  • Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
  • And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up.
  • And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Jam 5.14-15
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. 3 John 1.2
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thes 5.23

He was wounded for our transgressions.
He was bruised for our iniquities.
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
Isa 53.5

And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying...

  • Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people
  • God Himself will be with them and be their God
  • And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes
  • There shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying
  • And there shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. Rev 21.3-4

Confession for Christians in Healthcare
by W. Gary Crampton, ThD

1. We believe God is the Creator and Sustainer of life, and thus, Sovereign over all.

2. We believe Scripture is the written Word of God, the only rule of faith and life, including the practice of medicine.

3. We believe that each human being is a creature, a living being, made in the image of God. We are, therefore, to demonstrate concern for the life and welfare of all mankind.

4. We believe that in Adam's fall, all his ordinary posterity received in themselves the penalty of death, and all the misery and sickness of this life.

5. We believe Christ's redemption of His own is complete; yet misery, sickness, and death will persist until the final release of creation from its bondage.

6. We believe that God has given primary responsibility for health to the individual; that in marriage, the body of one spouse belongs to the other; and that the head of the household is responsible for those under his or her care.

7. We believe that the Church, in its role as teacher and guardian of God's people, must instruct, counsel and exhort to such behavior as is conducive to better health, and must, after their due confession, pray for and anoint those who are sick.

8. We believe that the State has a limited role, though legitimate interest, in health, and to that end God has sanctioned the imposition of restrictive measures.

9. We believe that God has called us to serve Him in the mitigation of the effects of sin on health, relieving misery, curing sickness and delaying death, as His agents of secondary cause.

10. We believe that our advice is our principal service to our patients as they seek to be stewards of their bodies, though God has also given various skills and medications to be used wisely for this purpose.

11. We believe that our lives should be examples of holiness and purity, as befitting our calling, and that all we do and say be for God's glory and the advancement of His kingdom.

General Quotations

The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis,
but rather the feeling of being unwanted, uncared for, and deserted by everybody.

Mother Teresa

Medicine -- the only profession that labors incessantly to destroy the reason for its existence.
James Bryce

Wherever the art of medicine is loved,
There is also love of humanity.

Hippocrates

You can only cure retail, but you can prevent wholesale.
Brock Chisholm

From the Florence Nightingale Pledge

  • I solemnly pledge myself before God, and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity, and to practice my profession faithfully.
  • I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling.
  • With loyalty I will endeavor to aid the physician in his or her work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.

To Be a Nurse

To be a nurse is to walk with God
Along the path that the Master trod.

To soothe the sorrow of human pain,
To faithfully serve for little gain.

To lovingly do the kindly deed,
A cup of water to one in need.

A tender hand on a fevered brow,
A word of cheer to the living now;

To teach the soul through its body's woe,
Ah! This is the way the Lord would go.

Oh gentle nurse with heart so true,
The great Physician works through you!

A.H. Lawrence

CHRIST'S LIGHT IN NURSING

Hippocratic Oath
Modern Version

By Louis Lasagna, Academic Dean of the School of Medicine, Tufts University
Used in many medical schools today.

I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

  • I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.
  • I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures which are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.
  • I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.
  • I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.
  • I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.
  • I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.
  • I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.
  • I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.
  • If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.
