How to be a winsome winner

Success is speaking words of praise,
In cheering other people's ways,
In doing just the best you can,
With every task and every plan.

It's silence when your words would hurt,
Politeness when your neighbor's curt,
It's deafness when the scandal flows,
And sympathy with others' woes.

It's loyalty when duty calls,
It's courage when disaster falls,
It's patience when the hours are long,
It's found in laughter and in song.

It's in the quiet time of prayer,
In happiness and in despair,
In love and kindness -- nothing less,
You'll find the thing God calls success.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth,
But you shall meditate in it day and night,
That you may observe to do
According to all that is written in it.
For then you will make your way prosperous,
And then you will have good success.

...Do not grow weary while doing good,
For in due season you shall reap
If you do not lose heart.
Joshua 1.8
Galatians 6.9

The twilight side of life's hill

1- The days of our years are threescore years and ten;
And if by strength they are fourscore years,
Yet their pride is labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth,
Before the difficult days come,
And the years draw near when you say:
"I have no pleasure in them."
Ps 90.10; Eccl 12.1

3- The lilacs where the robin built,
And where my brother set
The laburnum on his birthday, --
That tree is living yet!

I remember, I remember,
Where I was used to swing,
And thought the air must rush as fresh
To swallows on the wing;
My spirit flew in feathers then,
That is so heavy now,
And summer pools could hardly cool
The fever on my brow!

I remember, I remember,
The fir trees dark and high;
I used to think their slender tops
Were close against the sky:
It was a childish ignorance,
But now 'tis little joy
To know I'm farther off from heaven
Than when I was a boy.
"I Remember, I Remember" by Thomas Hood

2- I remember, I remember,
The house where I was born,
The little window where the sun
Came peeping in at morn;
He never came a wink too soon,
Nor brought too long a day,
But now, I often wish the night
Had borne my breath away.

I remember, I remember,
The roses, red and white,
The violets, and the lily-cups,
Those flowers made of light!

Guardian Angels

Sleep, my babe, lie still and slumber,
All through the night,
Guardian angels God will lend thee,
All through the night;
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping,
Hill and vale in slumber steeping,
Mother, dear, her watch is keeping,
All through the night.
"All Through the Night" from Wales

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray Thee, Lord, my soul to keep,
If I should die before I wake,
I pray Thee, Lord, my soul to take.
A child's prayer my Mom taught me

[Jesus said...]
Whoever receives one little child in My name receives Me.

Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin,
It would be better for him
If a millstone were hung around his neck,
And he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones.
I say to you that in heaven
Their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven.
Mt 18.5-6, 18.10

A New Page

1) He came to my desk with a quivering lip.
The lesson was done.
"Dear teacher, I want a new page," he said,
I have spoiled this one."

I took the old page, torn and blotted,
And gave him a new one, all unspotted,
And into his sad eyes smiled:
"Do better now, my child."

2) I came to God's throne with a trembling heart.
The year's work was done.
"Dear Father, I want a new life," I said,
"I have spoiled this one."

He took my old life, torn and blotted,
And gave me a new one, all unspotted,
And into my sad heart smiled:
"Do better now, my child."
"A New Leaf" by Kathleen Wheeler

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
There shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying.
There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.

Then He who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new."
And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful."
Rev 21.4-5

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.
Old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new!
2 Cor 5.17

If you hear a kind word spoken
Of some worthy soul you know,
It may fill her heart with sunshine
If you only tell her so.

If a deed, however humble,
Helps you on your way to go,
Seek the one whose hand has helped you,
Seek him out and tell him so!

If your heart is touched and tender
Toward a sinner lost and low,
It might help her come to Jesus
If you'd only tell her so.

Oh, my sisters, oh, my brothers,
As o'er life's rough path you go,
If God's love has saved and kept you,
Do not fail to tell men so!

Unknown

And Jesus said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature."
Mark 16.15

He who continually goes forth weeping, Bearing seed for sowing, Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, Bringing his sheaves with him.
Psalm 126.6

The Gardens of God

The Lord God planted a garden
In the first white days of the world,
And He set there an angel warden
In a garment of light enfurled.

So near to the peace of Heaven,
That the hawk might nest with the wren,
For there in the cool of the even'
God walked with the first of men.

The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth --
You are nearer God's heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.

Dorothy Frances Gurney

The garden of fellowship

The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. Gen 2.8

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day Gen 3.8a

The lost garden

therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. Gen 3.23

The garden of betrayal

When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place John 18.1-2a

The garden of agony

And now they came to an olive grove called the Garden of Gethsemane, and He (Jesus) instructed his disciples, ``Sit here, while I go and pray.'' He took Peter, James and John with Him and began to be filled with horror and deepest distress. Mk 14.32-33, LB

The garden of death

Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. John 19.41, KJV

The garden of New Life

And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him.
Rev 22.1-3

God Bless You! 5/3/00

  • The Lord bless you and keep you
  • the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you
  • the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

Numbers 6.24-26

I seek in prayerful words, dear friend,
My heart's true wish to send you,
That you may know that, far or near,
My loving thoughts attend you.

I cannot find a truer word,
Nor better to address you,
Nor song nor poem I have heard
Is sweeter than, "God bless you!"

God bless you! So I wish you all
Of brightness life possesses.
For can there any joy at all
Be yours unless God blesses?

God bless you! So I breathe a charm
Lest grief's dark night oppress you,
For how can sorrow bring you harm
If 'tis God's will to bless you?

And so, through all thy days
May shadows touch thee never --
But this alone -- God bless thee!
-- Then thou art safe forever.
